MINISTER LIBELLED.

£l5O DAMAGES AWARDED,

Auckland, February 18.

In the Supreme Court the Rev. Kayll, ex-Mayor of Mount Eden Borough proceeded against the P.P.A. newspaper “Sentinel,” claiming £I,OOO for alleged libel in a paragraph from the “Church Gazette” with a comment as follows: “The reference is, of course to a victory of Mr Kayll as mayoral candidate. We were disappointed at the victory of Mr Kayll but if report speaks truly, Mr Kayll haslittle to be proud of as a man, and less as a minister in. the method he employed to secure a victory. He lent himself to schemes of groundlings and it Is said deceived the members of his committee.” The defendant company contended that the use of the words complained of was without malice and bona fide comment on a matter of public interest. The jury found a verdict for plaintiff, assessing the damages at £l5O and judgment was entered accordingly.
