CIRCUS ON EASTON PARK.
PROTEST BY CR. BRYANT.
Easton Park again became a bone of contention at last night’s Council meeting, when Cr. Bryant moved, and Cr. Parkin seconded, pro forma, that (lie use of Easton Park he not granted for Wirth’s Circus. Cr Bryant said the granting of the use of the Park for such a purpose was wrong. He had given up the lease of the property as a grazing area so that it could he. used as a park, and now it was to be let for a few pounds. There were other sites in the town which could he secured by the circus people. Cr. Thompson: “Andy’s yard!” (Laughter). Cr. Coley said there was nothing to injure in the park except some boxthorn or lupins! The circus would enter the park from .Johnston Street, and pedestrians only would he allowed to enter the park through the Maui Street gates. Cr. Coley facetiously added that they would take care not to allow the elephants, lions and tigers to wander over the front garden. The Town Clerk explained that the park had been let for the purpose after consulting with the Reserves Committee, and on condition that the circus people deposited a cheque for £6 to make good any damage. He said the president of the Beautifying Society was quite agreeable, except that he thought the rent (£3) should be handed to the Society. (Laughter). The action of the Reserves Committee was endorsed, except that an endeavour be made to increase the deposit (o £lO. The discussion, which provided a humorous interlude, then closed with a final protest from Cr. Brvanl.
