DROWNING FATALITIES.

CAUGHT BY THE UNDERTOW. Carterton, February 4. James Wilfred Viles, aged 33, a single man, son of Josiafi Viles, one of Feathers ton’s oldest residents, was drowned in the sea at Lake Ferry yesterday afternoon. With a nephew he went for a swim in Pulliser Bay, and was caught by the undertow and carried out. The body was recovered the same evening. The inquest is being held to-day. Xaumarunui, February 4. A Maori child, two years of age, the son of J. Thompson, of To Rena, near Kakafii, was drowned iu the Wanganui river on Saturday. The child, with his sister, aged five year's went to the river for a bathe. The girl later gave an alarm and the boy's body was found floating iu calm water'.
