SUCCESSFUL. PUNTER CLALMS HIS MONEY. Auckland, February 4. At the Police Court a young man, Reginald Gamble, was charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Four charges of having laid totalisalor odds were also preferred against him. Accused pleaded not guilty to all charges. A witness stated that in an hotel bar on January 19th he made three straight bets am! one double with the accused. One horse was first another second and the third had two firsts but the double had missed. In all there was about £ls to collect and when asked for a settlement the accused said: “Nothing doing, - ’ and would not pay. For the defence, Mr Leary said tlie first point he would raise was that there was no proof oi any agreement to pay totalisator odds. Senior-Detective Hammond replied that proof was not necessary, since it was always understood tolulisator odds regulated the price. It was a matter of custom to fix tire odds if the lote did not. Mr Leary submitted that there uus no proof oi custom. AH Poynton, S.AI., said fie would liave to look into the point very carefully. Mr Leary intimated that in addition fie had a substantative defence if necessary. The hearing was adjourned.
