ACCESS TO BEACH AT POROUTAWHAO.
HON. NEWMAN’-S PROJECT.
The Hon. E. Newman, M.L.C., waited upon the Levin Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening, says the Chronicle, to represent the merits of the extension of the road from Poroutawhao through his property to the sea at the Wairarawa beach. The Hon. Newman stated that his own interest was in no way concerned with his action in waiting upon the Chamber. He represented the coast for many years and possessing a kindly feeling for the people of the district would like to see the population provided with a first, rate pleasure resort. He had heard that the road was to bo metalled from Poroutawhao to half a mile past the junction with the right of-way leading into his property and this had led him to take the matter up. The route the proposed road would take was perfectly flat with te exception of two sandhills which could easily be removed at the cost of a few pounds. The chairman of the County Council was reported to have said that lie did not see.the necessity for the road to the beach, and this was where the Chamber came in. The lion. Coates had said the Government could not give a grant for the road it the chairman of the County Council was against if. He had offered to give the land for the road and even to fence and he could not do more. A grant was wanted for the purchase of about 40 chains of land for the load where it ran through private property. He dwelt upon the advantages of the Wairarawa beach, which was supplied with an excellent spring of water. The chairman said the existing road to the Hokio beach was not altogether satisfactory, but it had to be recognised that it was there. Great difficulty had been experienced in having it put into anything like order, so that there did not seem much chance of having two roads looked after. He had also heard that the Native Land Court was prepared to sell some of the Maori land there. Mr P. W. Goldsmith pointed out that the County Council had a good many beach, roads to look after at present. The thing was to convince the members of the Whirokino Riding that the road was wanted. The Council had so many of these starved roads that it naturally took the attitude of avoiding having any more. . After "a brief general discussion the chairman assured Mr Newman that the matter would not be dropped by the Chamber but would be thoroughly gone into and discussed at thei next meeting.
