BOWLING.
The first round of the Triangular Contest was played at- Shannon yesterday afternoon under ideal weather conditions.
The president of the Shannon Club, (Mr Spencer) briefly welcomed the visiting rinks, and expressed the hope that they would have an enjoyable afternoon’s play. The green, although somewhat deceptive in appearance when play was commenced, brightened up after a few heads had been played, and was running very satisfactorUy. Of Foxton’s two rinks, Roore had win and Nye a loss. In his game against Whibley, Nye was up against good play and the sort of luck that now and again shows itself on (he green. On the first head the position was converted from one up for Nye to six down by means of the opposing skip’s play, and by the time the thirteenth head had been decided the score stood at 26 —7 in favour of Whibley, and at the conclusion of play Whibley had -.till further increased his lead. Roore started off rather slowly, the scores on the eighth head standing 12 —2 in favour of his opponent, but from then on he made the pace and concluded with a margin of nine points to the good. The following are the details of play:
IT. Butt, T. Gardner, Fargher, I'itwl Whibley (s) 36 v. Thomson, Christie, Smith, Nye (s) 12. Simpson, Huntley, Ross, Roore (s) 20. v. Aim, Spencer, Roach, Gagliardi (s), 17. Clayton, Spencer, Murray, Quarrio (s) 22 v. Challiee, Pike, Percy, Harris (s) 17. Cooper. Butt, Murphy. Knowles is) 24. v. Routlev, Snhan. Inder, Wilson (s), 21. The aggregate scores stand as follows:
Shannon (4 rinks), 00. Levin (2 rinks), 38. Foxfon (2 rinks). 38. The average per rink is:—Shannon 24? points, Levin 10 points. Foxfon 19 points.
Shannon has thus succeeded in gaining a substantial lead while placing four rinks in the field against two from each of the other clubs and with ordinary good luck should be successful in winning the Shield this season.
The visiting bowlers were very hospitably received and regaled with an ample and tasty aftemoou tea by the ladies. At the conclusion of play, thanks were expressed to the Shannon Club on behalf of the Levin and Foxfon bowlers, and three hearty cheers given for the ladies. The second round of this contes’ will be played at Levin on Wed _ nesdav next. J
