FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD
A meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held at Palmerston N. on Saturday, presided over by Mr J. Linklater, M.P., (chairman). There were also present: Messrs Nash, M.P., W. E. Barber, Clapham. Chrysf all, Ilolben and the secretary (Mr R. Rangiheuea). Messrs Jiekell and Gilmour, engineers, were also in attendance. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr Milhva.nl, asking for maximum length of boat suitable to work the port and maximum draft at spring and neap tides. — Information to be furnished. PROPOSED RIVER. CUTS.
A letter was received from Mr F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief to Public Works Department, stating that as far as the Department was concerned there would be no objection to the carrying out of the No. 1 proposal in regard to the cut through the Manawatu River on the Board’s area, at Foxton, provided that the navigable channel was simultaneously cut across Rush Plat. In regard to the sandhill fixing question, the writer said he was of opinion that if any scheme of fixing the mouth of the river was considered, it must involve the stopping of sand drift, and would, therefore, require the fixing of the sand on either side of the river to some distance from the banks. The writer also requested the Board to comply with the Harbour Act in the matter of submitting plans and specifications of the work contemplated. The letter was received, the engineer, Mr Jiekell, stating that No 1 cut would not be effective unless Rush Flat was penetrated simultaneously. INSPECTOR OF BEACHES. The Marine Department wrote confirming the appointment of Mr C. S. Larsen, harbourmaster, as honorary inspector of beaches. — Received. BEACH IMPROVEMENT COMMITTEE. The report, of the Beach Improvement. Committee concerning the activities of the past three years was read and it was decided that the matter of a donation to the committee be referred to the estimates. It was stated that the usual grant was £2O and Mr J. A. Nash thought that the Board should, if finances permitted, assist the committee in t he beautification of the seaside. RE - CAULKING DREDGE. Messrs Jiekell and Gilmour, engineers, submitted plans and specifications of a proposed cradle for the dredge, relative to the question of reeaulkmg same and the said cradle complete is estimated to cost £192. As the question of re(milking the dredge is one of urgency it was decided to adopt the engineers’ recommendations and to authorise them to call tenders immediately on the motion of Messrs Nash and Barber. DREDGE HIRING. Tt was resolved on the motion of Messrs Nash and Barber, to authorise the chairman to negotiate if found necessary, with the Mana-watu-Orona River Board the question of hiring the dredge for the purpose of effecting the proposed ints and to report to the Board wlmn negotiations have been made. LEASES AND TRANSFER Were approved and confirmed, senses: Board to George Sibley Fulton; same, to E. G. White; same to A. G. Thomas, same to P. J. Robbie. Transfer: L. M’Car thy to J. H. Morritt.
