ASPHALTING OF BOROUGH ROADS.
COUNCIL TO EXPERIMENT WITH JOHNSTON STREET,
At last night’s Council meeting the road foreman’s estimate as to the cost of asphalting a portion of the road at the north entrance to the borough, in accordance with a request from the local Retailers’ Association and Chamber of Commerce was considered.
The Mayor said that tlie probable results of doing the abovementioned work would not warrant the expenditure.
It. was decided to defer this work until the next financial year. Cr. Ross then moved the following motion, seconded by Cr. Smith: That a strip of roadway, 12 feet wide, lie tarred and sanded between Cook and Coley Streets, up to a cost of £3O. In moving the motion, Cr, Ross said that Johnston Street was at present in an excellent condition. It was the best road in the borough, but in a short time it would begin to crack up. This road had a great deal of heavy traffic over it and if a portion was tar-sealed as an experiment the Council would he able to see the benefit: or otherwise of tarsealing the borough roads.
The motion was carried unanimously.
