DISASTROUS FIRES.
RAILWAYS AND TELEGRAPH LINES INTERRUPTED.
HOMESTEADS DESTROYED,
Eltham, January 2.
A fire among bracken set fire to one hundred barrels of tar, belonging to Strafford, about ten chains on the Eltharn side of Ngaeie station, and telegraphic communication with Stratford was interrupted. The 8 a.m. train from Wanganui, which leaves Elf ham at. 1.18 p.m., was held up by the dense smoke in the cutting, which made it impossible to see if the line was damaged. Nothing could lie done to check the blaze, ns there was no water supply*. The Eltham brigade was on the scene but had .to leave the fire to burn out. The tar was for spraying the roads. Tt is reported that the railway lines were buckled. Gisborne, January 2. Log fires continue in the backblocks. The homesteads of A. HarIn the early* hours of New Year’s destroyed.
