MOTOR LORRY BURNT NEAR SHANNON.

BENZINE CARGO DESTROYED,

A fire- with disastrous results to a motor lorry and benzine cargo occurred in Die big cutting on the main road about a mile south of Shannon, about 10.30 on Friday night states the “Shannon Times.” The lorry was owned and driven by Mr Havill, of Palmerston North. On reaching the cutting, which is noted for the height of its hanks, the benzine tanks were replenished, and tbe driver was preparing to start again. When be cranked the engine, the lorry hurst into flames and

before long was a blazing mass. The cargo was 50 cases of benzine and these exploded, their contents running all over the road and burning as they ran. Traffic was completely blocked on the road till after midnight. Some Buckley residents had to return to Shannon and leave their cars, making their way home on foot across the hills. The lorry and load were, of course, completelv destroyed, the glare lighting up the conat.rvside for miles around.
