BOROUGH COUNCIL BYELECTION.
EX-COUNCILLOR THOMPSON RETURNED. The by-election to till the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the retirement of Cr. McMurray took place yesterday. The polling booth was situated in the Town Hall supper-room. The candidates were ox-Councillor R. J. Thompson, and Mr Harold Hamer. Very little interest was evinced by (lie burgesses in the election and had it not been for the assistance of cars to gather in supporters, the polling would have been much less. Two hundred and seventy-six burgesses recorded their votes out of a roll number of 806. The polling was as follows: R. .1. Thompson 160 11. limner 113 Informal 3 Mr Thompson’s majority was 47. When the returns were announced shortly after 7 o’clock, about 20 people acre present to hear the result. ’flic Mayor, on behalf of Mr Thompson, returned thanks and referred to the good work accomplished by i he defeated candidate in lire brigade matters and said he fell, sure if lie stood again, lie would be elected. Mr Hamer briefly thanked those who had supported him and called for cheers for the elected candidate which were heartily given.
