K.M., in convicting Edward Wilton, and imposing a. sentence of two months' imprisonment for making a hot on a horse race. Counsel for appellant said that his client was charged under seel ion 52 of ihe Gaming Act, and lie contended that section 5 of the 1920 amending Ae! curtailed the original Act. His Honour overruled this, saying that the amending Act had not altered the law in regard to laying tote odds. llis Honour said that hookinnking was one of the greatest curses ill New Zealand and was responsible for as much crime as liquor. He had no sympathy whatever with such offenders.
