BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the above wa's held last night. WATER AND DRAINAGE. 'V The water and drainage forefrram'reporfed that during the monthdje had been engaged in the following works: Erecting cattle stops at the two small gates at the front entrance to Easton Park, and giving them a good coat of priming; assisting the plumbers; connecting up nine householders with the high pressure water. Robinson St. south sewer has been blocked during the month and when this sewer was opened up a. lump of eompo half the size of the sewer pipe was discovered where a house connection had been made. Assistance has also been given the police re motor traffic during the month and 12 motor ears and four motor bikes were . stopped, all doing over 30 miles an hour, some of these being caught going past the public and Catholic schools. During the month 550,000 gallons of water was .pumped at a cost of s|d per 1,000 gallons.— Adopted. It was decided to procure badges for the water and traffic inspectors.

ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. The road foreman reported as follows: During the month the road staff has been engaged on the following works: —Mixing asphalt in Council yard and completing footpath in Johnston St., weeding water channels and footpaths Clyde St., and Whyte St., top dressing south end of Main Street and general maintenance. The staff is now engaged in mowing the cemetery. This with the grubbing of noxious weeds and clearing around graves will be finished in a day or two when we shall resume the top dressing of Main St. The grass has been cut and cleared up in Victoria Park. A suggestion was made to asphalt the remainder of the path on the west side of Main St., below the Family Hotel. This path is used by a good many people and now that the hydro electric poles have been erected it is far worse than before. At night time it is dangerous. We shall pro - bably have enough t_ar for this but should need more Belmont screenings. Cr. Coley said that something should be done in regard to the Main St. footpath. Cr. Bryant said that Wharf St. foolpaih should be repaired and that iu» new work should be undei'takcn at present. It was decided that Wharf St. footpath be repaired and that Main St. footpath south of Palmer’s Hotel be trimmed up. GENERAL. Decided that the fees for dog refor the year 1924 be as follows: —For all bona fide sheep and cattle working dogs 2/6, for all other dogs 10/-. The above fees to be paid on or before 31st. January, 1924. Matters in connection with the Manawatu Racecourse Trustees, re payment, of cost- of legal documents was held over. Decided that the Mayor be elected Council representative in connection with a deputation to the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce re shipping through the port of Foxton. Decided to support the Municipal Gas Conference’s suggestion to hold another conference to try and get cheaper coal and shipping, Cr. Bryant to he the Council’s delegate at such conference. Decided that the Council is of opinion that a direct levy in connection with the Palmerston North Hospital Board’s loan proposal of £6,000 is preferable, Council's quota being £26. Decided to donate £5 5/- to the Radium Appeal Fund. Cr. Coley’s notice of motion that the previous resolution abolishing bnchan traps be rescinded, was lost, Cr. Coley alone voting for. A letter was read from the Manawatu County Council refusing t<* make any further contribution towards street lighting on boundary , roads.—Received. Decided that, proceedings be taken forthwith against property owners failing to eradicate noxious weeds and lupins after notices have been served. Decided to write to the Fixe Board and request them to pfty the mghtwatcbman’s fee as now paid by the Council, namely £26 per annum;
