MAIMING OF HORSES
' TWO ANIMALS TORTURED. ONE’S EYE GOUGED OUT. i Taneatua, December 3. Several instances of the maiming of horses have lately occurred in the district. Every Saturday evening for weeks past some horses have been mutilated. About three weeks ago a valuable horse, which was tied up in the township, had its eye gouged out. The owner’s swag and stirrups were stolen. The following week two horses in the public pound were found dying in agony without any visible injury. Last Saturday evening a pony was found in the same condition. A post-mortem examination showed that it had been shot internally. The police have arrested a man in connection with the last-mention-ed outrage. A search of his effects it is stated, revealed some of the stolen property, while the horse which was blinded a few weeks ago was found near his premises shot in the same manner as the pony was shot, dying.
