FATE’S CRUEL JOKE
Fate has played a cruel joke on Mr Yokunosuke Inouye, an official of the Alilsui Company in New York. Following the Japanese earthquake he eagerly sought news of his wife and children in Tokio. A fortnight passed without tidings. Finally a cablegram was delivered at his office from a relative saying that the family had perished. Inouye leapt from the 15th story of the American Express Company’s sky-scraper on Lower Broadway, crashing to his death on the crowded pavement. On Monday another message was delivered at his office from Tokio marked “Delayed,” saying “First report erroneous. Family safe. Wife sends love.”
