CONFLAGRATIONS.
MR C. ELGAR’S HOMESTEAD BURNED. Masterton, Last Night. The luxuriously furnished, modern homestead, containing 20 rooms of Mr Charles Elgar (the owner of Black Ronald, the Derby winner), at Fernside, was totally destroyed by fire (his evening. Mr and Mrs Elgar were both in Wellington and only the domestic staff was at home at the fime'of the outbreak. The tire is believed to have started in the maids’ sewing room, where a kerosene burner had been used to heat irons. Both the Featherston and the military cam]) brigades were summoned, hut could only stand by the blazing structure, which burnt itself out in two hours. It is understood the homestead and furniture were covered, but the insurances are not available. BLAZE IN TOW STORE. Auckland, Last Night. A fire in Messrs Donaghy’s Ltd., flax store caused considerable damage to the building and stock of tow totalling 50 tons, and valued at £I,OOO. The full extent of the damage is not yet known, but all the bales on one side of the store are destroyed, and the remainder either scorched or sodden with water. The insurances are not available. The fire is attributed to spontaneous combustion,
