PALMERSTON N. HOSPITAL.
KIWITEA COUNTY COUNCIL DEMANDS PUBLIC INQUIRY. The Kiwitea County Council at 'its meeting yesterday decided to apIfcpeal to Dr. Valentine, InspectorGeneral of Hospitals for sympathetic assistance in the matter of compelling' the Palmerston North Hospital Board to grant an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the treatment of a. ease from the Kiwitea County. A letter was received from the secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital Board acknowledging receipt of the* council’s letter of August Ist last, which demanded a public inquiry in connection with the treatment of the daughter of Mr J. J. Bryce of Pemberton, at the hospital. In reply, the letter, which was read at yesterday’s meeting of the council, stated that the matter had been carefully considered by the Hospital Board and a full reply to all the complaints had been forwarded to Mr Bryce on August 20, and that the" board had not heard anything further in the matter. The opinion was expressed that, as the council was a contributor to the board, it was entitled to receive less curt 'eonsideration. The allegations concerning the treatment of Mr Bryce’s daughter were such that the council deemed it desirable that the matter should be fully ventilated and the council decided unanimously that nothing short of a public inquiry would meet the case. It was decided: “That owing to the unsatisfactory replies to the council’s letter to the Hospital Board, the clerk be instructed to write to Dr. Valintine stating the position and the reasons for the council’s action and asking for sympathetic assistance in making the Hospital Board grant the request.”
