FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held at-Pal-merston N. to-day, by. Tj Mr J. Linklater, M.P. (chairman'. SECRETARY’S REPORT. The secretary submitted the following report: — Proposed Transport Co. —If the trade to the port continues to be regular and consistent as at present it is possible that two or three business men of Feilding, will form a Transport Co. Those interested in this enterprise have sought the offiee’s assistance in the matter of statistical information. Brushbox Decking Timber.— Brushbox decking timber, size 6in. to lOin. by 4in., length 16ft. Gin., is offered for sale at 36/- per 100 super, ft. f.o.b. Sydney, terms nett cash against documents. The timber is available for prompt shipment and if the Board is interested and in the market such can be arranged without delay. Insurance. —The lire policy on the pilot’s residence has been increased f rom £350 to £6OO. Lighting of Wharf. —If the present arrangements of allowing the stationmaster to light the lamp whenever informed that a vessel was expected to arrive at the wharf during the night is satisfactory and convenient to the Board, the Railway Department is quite prepared to continue the practice provided the Board is willing to bear any of the responsibility. Hon. Inspector of Beaches. —On the 11th ult. a Marine Department officer paid an official visit to Foxton in reference to the question of removing driftwood or any other material from the river foreshore and the ocean beach. Subject to the Board’s consent, he recommended the appointment of the Harb-our-master as an hon. inspector of beaches, whose duty it is to demand authorities from persons found interfering with driftwood, etc. Proposed Beach Road Grant. — In reference to this matter, the Board’s solicitor pointed out that the Board could not legally make a grant of £SO to the Manawatu County Council for the improvement and efficient upkeep of the Main Beach Road beyond the borough boundary. The Board is empowered to expend money qnly on Harbour works within the meaning assigned to the expression by the Harbours Act in exercising its powers under the Act, and for certain purposes specifically mentioned in the Act which do not include, the proposed expenditure. The Act specially provides for the Board to enter into an agreement with and to contribute to the local authority a proportion of the cost of tion of a road or street" qv»>£* reclaimed land and endowment land. Deposit. —In the matter of the destruction of Mrs E. J. Krause’s dwelling at the Heads by fire, Messrs Jacobs and Grant have deposited the sum of £66 less exchange, as a guarantee against non-erection of same. Approaches to Wharf. —The Railway District Engineer’s estimates in connection with the laying of aproaches to the wharf are as follows: Timber £9O, asphalt £7O. Sorting Charges.—The Feilding Chamber of Commerce in acknowledging the Board’s circular letter re excessive sorting charges by the Department at the port of Foxton, signified its willingness 1o eo-opei-;,te with other Chambers in the matter of approaching the Minister for the purpose of protesting against these exorbitant sorting charges, and also signified its willingness to he represented on any delegation to the Minister in support of the Harbour Board. Transfer of Leases. —Peder Pedersen to Elsie R. Harrison. Noxious Weeds. —It lias been reported to the office that noxious weeds on the Round Bush Reserve arc growing profusely, due no doubt to tin* want of proper attention and oare. If allowed i<> continue in its present state they will be very difficult to eradicate. Accounts amounting to £2o*2 17s 5d were passed for payment.
