BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers last night. Decided that an per week he granted the sanitary contractor until the end of the financial year, Cr. Coley voting against. Decided to withdraw Court proceedings against ML McDowell, for breach of impounding by-laws, provided he could supply evidence that the horse impounded which he released, did not belong to him but to Ibe Whakaronga Dairy Co., Cr. G. Coley voting against. Decided to pay Mr .Tack 18/-, in connection with covering for Council table, Crs. Colev and Adams voting against. The standing orders were waived in order that a resolution passed relative to establishing baths on foreshore of Manawafu River he rescinded. Decided that ten per cent, he added to all rates outstanding on the St h December, 1923. Decided that the nightsoil service lie discontinued in the reticulated, area after the 31st March, 1924. Decided to purchase £25 worth of new hooks for the library. The Mayor reported on a conference in connection with the Shannon Bridge, which has previously appeared in these columns. Cr. Smith asked that plans be prepared for proposed public read-ing-room, library, Plunket room etc. to be submitted to the ratepayers at tk.e forthcoming public meeting. The Mayor said that he did not think this was necessary. Cr. Coley said he was dead aguinst any more loans until the Water and Drainage scheme was finished. He would see the present proposal through but no more. It was decided in response to the meeting of ratepayers that a further meeting of ratepayers be held Cor the purpose of discussing the erection of public library, readingroom, rest room, Plunket room and swimming baths, etc. That a statement of annual cost of above he prepared ou the basis of a capital cost of £1,200, excluding swimming baths, plus maintenance.
