MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.
The Manawatu-Oroua River Board met yesterday, Mr R. T. Bell presiding. There were also present Trustees W. S. Carter, H. Wilton, M. F. Anderson, W. H. Smith, and N. P. Nielsen. The engineer was instructed to consult with Mr Mackie, Government Valuer, regarding the pushing on of the classifications of the Board’s sub-divisions and placing the sub-divisions. The engineer reported that he was making full inquiries in the United Kingdom and America as to the machinery required for the Board’s undertakings. —His action was approved. ENGINEER’S REPORT. In his report, the engineer, Mr F. C. Hay, stated, inter alia, that he had been pegging out the Manawntu, Ivuku and Rush Flat lines, and surveying the mouth of the river, and adjacent coast lines. The surveys at tho mouth of the river were important to show the effect of the sand drift on the outlet, and he hoped to get the Rush Flat line so located as to act in the opposite direction to the drift and tend to neutralise the throttling effect of the beach encroachment.’’ The boring tools had been experimented with and were in good shape. Messrs Ward and Salmond had sent in a letter stating that they expected to have the survey work with plans and cross section to Walden’s corner, completed by November 19th. The position at October 31 was that 25 per cent, of the contract was completed, and there were two months to go to the contract date for completion. He had made an examination of the existing boundaries in every sub-division except Makerua, and plans had been forwarded to the office and direct to members of their inspection. The question of -alteration was a delicate one, but there was no doubt in his mind that the district at present was too small, and as long as the Board had the intention of classifying in the ratio of benefits and had a class of non-contribution, there was no hardship to anyone in extending 1 the boundaries to any degree; say, to the limits of the present Drainage Board boundaries. —Adopted.
