The monthly meeting 1 of the local state school committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rangiheuea (secretary), Geo. Coley, Jno. Ross, F. ltimmer, Pearson, Perreau and the head teacher (Mr Banks). An apology for absence was .received from Mr Stevenson. Correspondence was received from the Board returning cheque for £G 0/2 upon which subsidy was applied for and granted for school library. The amount was contributed bv the children.

Mr Coley reported upon the fencing of the girls’ playground, which is being carried out under his supervision, and favourable comment was made on the work.

Accounts amounting to £3 14/10 were passed for payment. The head teacher reported that the roll number was 447 but the average attendance during the past month was not submitted. Certain repairs needed were referred to and a request made out of the capitation for sanitary purposes at flie Wharangi school. The Chairman said the Wharangi side-school would receive its proportion of capitation and the head teacher was asked to submit the average attendance at the school. The Chairman went on to say that the Minister of Education and Department were taking steps to close smaller schools and make provision to centralise. Tf the Beach residents wanted to retain the school at the seaside and for which the Harbour Board had set aside an area of live acres, they should lose no time in advocating the establishment of a separate school there. Mr Perreau said he would move in this direction. The head taecher said he would prefer the school to remain as a side school Several matters of a routine nature were discussed and Messrs Colev and Ross were appointed visitors for the month.
