MISTAKEN.

A REPORTER WITH A WADDY. Tired with the strenuous night’s work, and trundling his weary way home in the small hours of Saturday morning, a well-known Wanganui newspaper reporter (says the Herald) paused on the town bridge to draw breath and there to think over the awful tragedy that had been enacted during the night. He was a cautious scribe for he had a little waddy under his, arm in case an undesirable-should loom out of the ■ darkness. He had not been long in his meditations when he was joined by another young man. The scribe began' to tell him of the murder, and the young man began to timidly ask' questions and to keep a watchful eye on the reporter. The two then trudged along over the bridge and up the steps, the young man still keeping at arms’ length, and taking 1 good care that the reporter did not get behind him. He was no dpnbt a very pleased individual w T hen the scribe at last said: “Goodnight” on the top of the hill. That incident, impressed itself deep on the mind of the young man. The next night he could retain the information no longer, and off he went to the police station to unload it. Here the detectives were all attention, and after most serious deliberations and questions, some three sheets of'-foolscap were filled and duly signed. Then a special staff was detailed to track down the man of mystery, but a chance word saved a good deal of trouble, and the reporter,' who would rather do any person a good turn, than an injury, is quietly smiling regarding the awful suspicion that has been cast upon him.
