PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.
At the conclusion of the function in the Council Chambers on Thursday night, the Mayor announced that a meeting of ratepayers would be held next Friday night to discuss the public baths loan proposals. Cr. Smith: Will you meeting to also discuss the question of a public library and reading room at that meeting? The Mayor: That had better be left over; Lain making an announcement about the baths.
Cr. Smitli: Now that you are making a public announcement. I think it only right that an announcement should be made on the question of a public reading room and library. There is no reason why the two proposals should not be discussed at the meeting and I would like, an announcement from yon on the subject. The Mayor said they had better settle the other question first.
We understand that the Water and Drainage Committee are submitting a report to the Council re site of the baths. The general opinion is that if the river site is chosen the expenses in connection with the loan proposal may just as well be thrown into the river as the public will never sanction such a
position for the baths. Easton Park is the popular site suggested.
