At last night’s Borough Council meeting the borough ranger reported that during the month “24 head of stock was impounded and driving fees to the amount of 13/- collected/ One shilling trespass fee was also collected. .

The ranger reported at last night's Council meeting that during the month he. had impounded 1(1 cows and 8 horses. Three horses were n.so arrested 1 and released to their owners. The sum of 2/- was coblee ted and.paid to the Town Clerk. Those present at hist night's Council meeting were: Ilis Worship the Mayor (Mr .). Chrystall) and Crs. Bryant, Smith, Boss, Coley, MeMurray, Adams, Walker and Parkin. An apology for absence was received from Cr. Thorpe. Mr 1L Edwards, of Palmerston North, was also in attendance.

Aii amusing incident happened in Main Street, at about midnight last night. Some enthusiastic members of the band were endeavouring to stretch a canvas sign across Main Street when the wind took charge and nullified their labour. To make matters worse a passer-by kicked the ladder from the building by which they had ascended from the road and they had to perform a daring feat in order to descend. The noise attracted the nightwatchman demanded an explanation and an inmate of one of the buildings extinguished a light to defeat the object of the supposed burglars. The sign is to be repaired and another attempt made to erect it.

At last night’s Council meeting accounts amounting to £B3O 18/3 were passed for payment.

As a sequel to the break-up of a gang of juvenile thieves eight hoys appeared in the Juvenile Court at Auckland .on Saturday, on 08 charges, involving theft and receiving. The ringleader, who had three previous convict ions, was sentenced to three years’ reformative treatment, the others being diseharged and ordered to make restitution.

At the local police court yesterday before Mr Hornblow, J.P., a young man named Robinson, arrested for drunkenness on Saturday and allowed mil on hail was again arrested on Sunday in a similar condilion. On the first charge he was convicted and fined f>/- and on the second charge 20/- in default 24 hours.

An unfortunate accident happened near the Marotiri Post Office on Sunday, when a lad named Hamilton, of Shannon, who was riding a bicycle, was thrown under the wheel of the motor bus conveying the Maori String Band on the return journey* from Fox I on, owing to a cycle wheel twisting from some unaccountable reason. As a result, the hoy sustained a broken leg. The Mayor of Shannon (Mr W. Murdoch), who was with the party, immediately telephoned for medical assistance and the ambulance from (he Palmerston North Hospital. The doctor was soon on the scene, and attended to the patient, who was then conveyed to the Palmerston North Hospital. Patrons at the Royal Theatre on Saturday night were given a. very agreeable surprise when (lie prologue “From here to Shanghai” was rendered. The performers consisted of nine local girls nicely gol up in Japanese costume. The singing was. something out of the ordinary and the harmonising excellent. This exhibition proved to the audience that Eoxton has some excellent voices well worth • training. The performance reflected great credit on Mrs Hamer, who has spent a good deal of time on the preparation of the piece. The item called forth continued applause and the young ladies were compelled to return and render the piece a second time.
