MINING TROUBLE.
RUMOURS OF EMPLOYMENT OF FREE LABOUR. Westport, Last Night. There appear 1 to be no fresh developments in connection with the mining crisis. There are rumours that. the mines will -be opened for free labour shortly, if no movement is made in the meantime by the miners to resume work. Others say that the mines will be closed down definitely for some time, but no information confirming these is available from the mining managements. A meeting of the District Council of Miners was held in Westport on Saturday, at which it was stated that according to the official report: “In all the mining camps a magnificent spirit of solidarity prevails and the council considers it only a question of time before the coal owners back down from the position they have taken up.” Money is stated to be bowing in freely for the miners’ dependants, assuring that starvation, the weapon by wlxicb the coal owners hoped to force a surrender will fail dismally to accomplish its object. Ail is qgiet at the mines, where several free entertainments are being held to pass the time away, pending a settlement Of the dispute,
