FOXTON TENNIS CLUB.

'ANNUAL REPORT. - The following is the annual report to be .submitted to members at the annual general meeting to be held on Thursday evening next: — “Your committee has pleasure in submitting to you-the annual report \ and balance-sheet. Socially, the past season has bpen a very -successful one but from a match winning point of view the Club’s success was below the average. Three inter-club matches were played during the season, two against Manavvatu which were won and one against Levin was lost. In the Country Club competition the Club was not successful in winning any of the matches played although some good and close games were fought out, however what was lost in games the players gained in experience and with some promising players coming on better results should be achieved next season. Your committee has fully realised the urgent necessity of providing more courts as the present two are inadequate to meet the demands of increased membership and to this end has during the past season carefully considered an oli’er of a suitable section for tennis courts. After going thoroughly into the matter the committee decided that the purchase price and expendiure of laying down fresh courts in addition to the present liability and the remote prospects of selling the club’s property at anything but a sacrifice was too great an undertaking to raise the necessary finance at such an inopportune time: Your committee also considers that before looking elsewhere for courts, steps should be taken to clear the club’s liability and so release the guarantors, they, without hesitation, came to the rescue at the most critical time of the club’s existence and it is only reasonable that they should be shown first consideration before thinking of quitting the courts while in debt. In regretting the inconvenience players may have been caused through lack of courts the committee recommend to the incoming committee that the question of laying down another court be seriously considered so as to relieve the present congestion. As will be seen by the accompanying balance-sheet the club’s overdraft now stands at £lO5, an increase of £2l op last year, due to Incorporation charges £ls and sundry other non-recurring items. The courts are in need of another top-dressing and a few minor repairs require the attention of an energetic working ‘‘bee.” The membership now stands at 47 and the popularity of the game points to an increase in the coming season. The club has been unfortunate in losing several members during the season and such keen and energetic members as Messrs McDonnell, Bro- - phy, Fergie, and Frankland the club could ill afford to lose and their absence will be especially felt at the working “bees.” Members will be glad to learn that Mrs Austin-John-ston and Miss Austin escaped injury in the recent disaster in Japan, although they must have had an unenviable experience. In retiring from office your committee desire to thank all members for their support and assistance during the past season and wish the incoming committee success and prosperity.” Balance-Sheet.—‘The balancesheet showed receipts to total £152 8/4, which was made, up as follows: Subscriptions £39 1/-, RShaw’s honorarium £2 15/-, sale of tennis balls £4 5/-, entrance fees (competitions) 13/-, bank balance , 31/8/23 £lO5 14/4, total £152 8/4. The expenditure totalled £152 8s 4d, the bank balance at 19/9/22 being £B4 4/11.
