DISCOVERY OF PACIFIC.
COMMEMORATIVE LUNCHEON. Wellington, Last Night. The need of co-operation and a bettor understanding between Britain and America and a better feeling towards other nations was stressed at a luncheon held to-day to commemorate the discovery of the paid tic by the Spanish adventurer, Balboa.
Sir John Salmond presided and those, present included Sir Joseph Ward,-Messrs Wright (Mayor). Caughley (Director of Education), Moran (Act ing-Consul-ttenoral for America), the presidents and chairmen of various local bodies, and the Consuls of many countries.
The example of the Pan-Pacifc-union was cited, and it was urged that it might well he followed, in order to cement a feeling of friendship amongst the nations, particularly those who had interests in the Pacific.
The object, of the Pan-Pacific Union was to establish peace, said Sir Joseph Ward. We must have some body like the League of Nations in which to put our trust. The value of the extension of trade was stressed by other speakers, also the education of natives.
