NEWS AND NOTES.

A cricket-club in Glasgow lias insured itself against possible Haims by persons injured by balls hit outthe playing pitch. The annual premium works out at the modest sum of 3d per player. “If the public only know how much delay a badly-written telegram or letter address causes at times, I am sure they would take a little more pains to write more legibly than they do,” said Mr A. T. Markmain, Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department. “I suppose it is because they are in a hurry, but there' are occasions when the writing of telegrams is really shocking —a Chinese puzzle. When one gets into an operator’s hands and he fails to decipher what certain words are, the telegram is sent down to the counter clerk for elucidation, and if he cannot find out what has been written he has to ring up the sender. All this means delay. It is caused by the bad writing, perhaps, of somebody in a hurry, but all his rush is negatived by the illegibility ' of his writing, and the consequent delay in despatch.
