THE HIGHWAYS SCHEME.
CONSTITUTION OF WEST COAST DISTRICT. NEED FOR ENERGETIC ACTION. At its meeting on Saturday, (lie Hiivowhenna County Council received a letter from the District Highways Council, stating that the Council approved of the constitution of the Highways District comprising Kiwitea, Pohangina, Oroua, Kairanga, Manawatu, Horowhennn. Hutt and Makarn. The chairman said every endeavour should be made to push this matter on —there should be no delay, especially as this district was to gain an advantage. The chairman was appointed the Council's represen ta t ive. Cr. Monk thanked the Council and said although he had plenty to do lie would put “push” into the matter which was needed. Horowlienua, he considered, should have every attention as no other County had a longer line of traffic road. He would do' his best to get the best possible terms and endeavour also to get a permanent surface on the roads. The appointment would entail a deal of time and expense and the Council should decide to give the same rate of pay as given a representative attending a Council meeting. In answer to Cr. Broadbelt, the chairman said the expenses would be paid from the Council’s funds. The chairman suggested that the rate of pay be £1 a day and travelling expenses as allowed by the Council, This was agreed to.
