NEWS AND NOTES

A whale recently caught off the shores of Greenland bad in its body the head of an old harpoon, which experts estimate mast have been there for 50 years at least. The deaths of two nonagenarians and four octogenarians have been recorded in the Oamaru district during the last four weeks. Sir George Grey’s old home al Kawau, known as the Mansion House, recently changed hands, being purchased by several Auckland residents.

An amusing tribute to the efficacy of newspaper advertising is paid by an officer of an insurance company who was visiting country agencies. Included in some advertisements published was a statement to the effect that “ashes are useless, but the company pays for them without delay.” With an eye to business, two small boys, who evidently read the papers, collected and sifted the household cinders. They appeared at the country ageney bearing between them a benzine tin filled with ashes. Their enterprise did not go unrewarded, as the company’s officer appreciated the joke.
