MOTOR V. RAILWAY.
EFEECT OF HIGH FREIGHTS. The Levin Co.-op. Dairy Company wrote the Horowhenua County Council at its meeting on Saturday enclosing a copy of a letter forwarded to the Minister of Railways re freight on benzine, kerosene and butter, and asked for support. The letter suggested “That owing to the enormous amount of damage done to County roads caused by heavy motor traffic in carting benzine, etc., together with the loss of revenue to the Railway Department, and in order to minimise the said damage and loss, the Railway Department be asked to consider the reduction of freights on the above mentioned goods at the earliest possible moment.” The chairman considered the letter should be supported and moved accordingly. Cr. Broadbelt said the Railway Department a year ago, had promised to do something but had failed. Cr. Harkness considered it was the high rates that forced the traffic to the roads and that if freights were brought down the railway would get more revenue. The letter is to be supported by the County Council.
