The heavy showers which fell yesterday afternoon rather marred the opening of the Palmerston N. Bowling Club’s greens for the season. Early in the day the green had been in good order and it had been intended to play upon it, but the « rain rendered this impossible. Nevertheless the formal opening was performed by the president, Mr J. B. Wilton, who thanked the visitors and others who had gathered ' to assist. They were opening a little earlier than had been at first anticipated, but as the club missed six weeks of fine weather before opening last season, it was intended to make an early start. In referring to the position of the club, the president pointed out that two years ago there had been only two bowling clubs in Palmerston North. Since then three new clubs had been started, and the Palmerston North Club’s membership had suffered in consequence. Nevertheless the number of bowlers in Palmerston N. had considerably increased. It was hopedsthat with the special efforts which would be made to increase the membership and decrease the liability, the club’s position would be greatly improved by the next annual meeting. Messrs McGibbon (Dannevirke), Christie (Fox!on), Lyons (Woodville), Edwards (Terrace End), Bryant (Northern) and Shand (Ma- " nawatu) spoke on behalf of the visiting bowlers. DAYLIGHT SAVING. APPROVED BY BOWLERS Christchurch, 11th Sept. The principle of .daylight saving in the summer months was affirmed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association today. The Wellington Centre wrote in support of daylight saving. Mr M. M. M'Callum (Auckland) said that he thought that Mr Massey’s proposed compromise, to the effect that the clock be put forward exactly twelve hours ahead of Greenwich time, was the best they could, get. That would give them half an hour extra in the evenings. Mr L. G. Blackwell (Christchurch) : “That would mean that in Invercargill people would have to start work at daybreak. Mr M'Callum: In winter time? Mr Blackwell: Yes, but that is not what bowlers want. We want the extra hour in the summer months only. Mr W. Coltman (Auckland) said that they were all in favour of daylight saving but he did not see any possibility of-getting it through, as country members, who were so strong in the House of Representatives, were against it. He moved: “That this association is in favour of the principle of daylight saving.” The motion was carried unanimously. SUNDAY BOWLS. PAHIATUA PRESIDENT’S DISAPPROVAL. At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua Bowling Club, Mr P. Thomson (who was then absent from the district) was elected President, subject to his acceptance. On Saturday evening the chairman (Mr H. ‘McSherry) trusted that Mr Thomson would accede to the wishes of members and accept the office for the ensuing year (Hear, hear.) Mr.. Thomson .-aid ..he appreciated very much the honour conferred on bin, but _he .desired. to make it clear that he personally disagreed strongly with the resolution of the annual meeting to allow bowls to be played on the local green on a Sunday. He had always been opposed to this. However, he pointed out that the decision had been arrived at by a majority of those present at the annual meeting. He would have accepted 'the position of President more gracefully if that motion had hot been passed. However, he had no desire to raise that issue that evening. He did not believe in Sunday play on principle and he did not think.it. a good thing for the club. If they were willing to accept him with that reservation, he would be pleased to be their President for the ensuing year (appluase). Mr C. A. Harrison: Do you mean you will not allow Sunday play if you are President? Mr Thomson: Oh no. He was simply stating his own personal opinion and objection.- He opposed Sun-

day play on principle. He was not in sympathy with the majority of those who passed the motion to allow Sunday play. Mr McSherry: On that issue only? Mr Thomson: Yes. He repeated that if they accepted him as President, it was with the reservation that lie was entirely opposed to Sunday play. Mr McSherry said he thought they understood Mr Thomson’s position. He had been quite candid in that matter.

Mr Thomson said that having made his protest he would consent to be their President. He then took the chair amid a round of applause. At a later stage the President expressed the hope that they would all pull together and have a record season.—Pahiatua Herald.
