THE HEMP MARKET.

AUGUST GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for the month of August for hemp, tow and stripper slips, have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —‘ Hemp: —The total number of bales graded was 4,053, as compared with 3,339 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 714 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st August, 1923, the number of bales graded was 60,351, as compared with 62,573 for the previous twelve months, a, decrease of 2,222 bales. Tow: —During the month 924 bales of tow were graded as compared with 911 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 13 bales. For the twelve months ending 31st August, 1923, the number of bales graded was 15,571, as compared with 14,541 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 1,030 bales. Stripped Tow: —During the month there were 127 bales op stripper tow graded. , Stripper Slips:—The total number of bales graded was eight, as compared with nil for the same month last year, an increase of eight bales. The following is the detailed particulars of the hemp graded:— Good High Low

Three bales at Pieton were graded fine. Fourteen bales at Foxton and 57 at Wellington were rejected and one bale at Wellington was condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— Fine 3 (nil), good fair 387 (601), high fair 2,234 (2,085),. fair 1,261 (539), common 96 (77), rejected 71 (38), condemned 1 (nil), a total of 4,053 bales. The number of bales graded at each poi-t was as follows: —Auckland 746, Foxton 1,106, Wellington 1,941, Blenheim 126, Pieton 13, Bluff 121. The following is the detailed particulars of the tow graded: —

Three bales -at Auckland, four at Foxton and six at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the 'corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Ist grade 314 (467), 2nd grade 483 (416), 3rd grade 114 (20), condemned 13 (8), a total of 924 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was as follows: —Auckland 224, Foxton 226, Wellington 399, Blenheim 25, Pieton 7, Bluff 43. Stripper Tow: Thirty bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade and 97 bales at Foxton 2nd grade.

Stripper Slips: Eight bales at Auckland were graded Ist grade.
