A FATAL DRINK

SENSATION AT OPAKI

Masterton, August 23,

A sensation was caused at Opaki (three miles from Masterton) this morning, when it became known that two well-known horse-train-ers, Messrs Alex Watson and Thomas Higgins, had been poisoned. It appears that the two men partook of some whisky at Higgins’ cottage, from a bottle which had previously been sampled. Watson immediately collapsed and died in six minutes. Higgins summoned doctors, who on arrival found him prostrate. They administered emetics and applied a stomach pump. Higgins was sent to hospital, and has every chance of recovering. Watson leaves a wife and family. The presence of the poison in the liquor is a mystery.
