ALLEGED THEFT.

RACING CLUB SECRETARY CHARGED. Rotorua, August 22. At the Magistrate’s Court, Granville Hunt, formerly secretary to the Rotorua Racing and Bowling Clubs, was charged with obtaining £l2O from Jesse B. Tanner by false pretences on May 31st. The evidence alleged he got the money by saying he wanted it as a loan to the Rotorua Auctioneering Company, and used it to make up a deficiency in the racing club accounts. Accused was also charged with stealing £l6 from a fund of which he was treasurer, for the relief of the family of the late Mr Dodson, an employee of the picture company. Accused pleaded not guilty to both charges, and was committed for trial at Hamilton on September 4th.

Further charges are pending. Accused 1 was allowed bail in the sum of £I,OOO, with two sureties of £SOO each.
