HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
A meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society was held last evening for the purpose of altering the date for the Spring Show. The date usually fixed on for this show is about the middle of September, but, owing to the light nature of the Foxton soil this date has with a. fairly dry season, proved too late for many exhibitors’ bulbs. The Committee therefore decided this year to have the show a week earlier and the 7th September was decided on. However, owing to the lateness of the present season, caused by cold weather and no warm rains, quite a number of exhibitors made known to the secretary that they were afraid they would have no blooms to exhibit by the 7th., as most of the show bulbs were just coming through the ground. Enquiries were then made of most local growers with the result that (lie general wish, without an exception, was that a later date should be fixed. This resulted in the committee postponing the date to the 14th September, this allowing another week.
Competitions and a short musical programme were then discussed ami will be made public later. The management of the afternoon tea and the supper is in the capable hands of Mrs F. Procter and Mrs Heasman.
Mr Alan Gibson, judge of the cut blooms section is to be asked to give an address on “Bulb Culture.” This should prove of great interest and assistance to those who are doing their best to produce good bulbs.
