MAIN TRUNK TRAINS.
SAFETY OF POSTAL VAN. Replying to a question in Parliament the Hon. J. G. Contes (Minister of Railways) said it was not proposed to arrange for a luggage van to be attached to the Main Trunk express trains immediately behind the engine, because such a position would be quite inconvenient for handling the luggage and would result in delays to trains at stations. Recent events did not, he said, show that the running of such a vehicle in that position would afford any greater degree of safety to the postal van. In this connection it might be pointed out that in the Ongarue accident the postal van although next to the engine, was practically undamaged, while the ears immediately behind the postal van were badly telescoped.
