MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD.
DISTRICT GROUPS DEFINED,
Wellington, August 15. At the second meeting of the Main Highways Board, the principal matter for discussion was the progress of grouping counties into highways districts. Although in the earlier stages of consideration by the counties it appeared that there was a considerable difference of opinion as to the proposed grouping, further consideration by the conference had cleared away many of the supposed difficulties. The groups : No. 1, North Auckland; 2, South Auckland; 3, Taurangaj 4, Gisborne; 5, Napier; 7, Taranaki; 8, Wanganui; 9, Wellington West; 10, Wellington East; 12, West Coast; 13, North Canterbury; and 14, Canterbury Central, were all agreed to by the constituent counties. Local bodies are to be communicated with in regard to machinery and plant equipment and as to local intentions.
Preliminary investigations show there is plant in the hands of local bodies valued at half a million. Investigations are to be made as to the quality, life and value of road surfacing materials, to enable the board to advise local authorities. Various other matters of importance were also considered. Suggestions were made and it is considered that in some intanees there will be considerable amendments to grouping, due to internal disagreements.
