PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.

MATTER. FURTHER DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL.

Some years ago the Borough Council obtained plans and an estimate l'or public swimming baths at a site near tlie water edge. Owing to a diversity of opinion as to the su liability of the site selected and the installation of the water and sewerage scheme, the matter was left over.

At last night’s Borough Council meeting the following ietter was received from Mr if. Edwards: —“Re the establishment of swimiuin, batli for Fox ton. In the month of April 1918, at your request, I took levels on a proposed silo for a bath aud prepared a plan, etc. I hear tlial you now contemplate going on with the work. Bossibly now that Foxlon has a supply of water under pressure, additional plans would be required and I will be pleased U> receive your iustructions in the matter.”

The Mayor, in referring to the it Her, said swimming baths had been one of his election planks. If the capitation grant from the Education Board would be sufficient to cover interest and maintenance he would be prepared to consider a site for the baths near the school.

Cr. McMurray said he would look into this phase of the question; The Mayor moved and Cr. Brj-r ant seconded the following motion, which was carried : v “That the Harbour Board be asked if they would be prepared to lease the foreshore from the railway terminus, 120 ft. in length, for the purpose of swimming baths at a pepper-corn rental of a minimum term of 21 years.”
