HEAVY TRAFFIC ON COUNTY ROADS.

LORRY DRIVERS DEFY BY-LA AY

Considerable discussion took place at Monday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council in reference. to the by-laws regulating heavy motor traffic on the county roads, especially on the point that in spite of orders to the contrary, certain motor-lorries were still using the roads. Some lorry proprietors had bowed'Tp the decision of the council that heavy 'traffic must not use the roads during the winter months, but others were continuing to use the roads, with a view to compelling the council to bring a test case. The principal offenders were stated to be in Wanganui, and they were travelling the roads daily carting heavy loads. Cr. Barber considered that the council should institute proceedings as a test case and on the question of securing the evidence to support the ease, it was recommended that the coum ' should appoint an inspector. It was also pointed out that the lorries were passing through the county at night time. It was decided to refer the matter to the count.v council’s solicitor, with a view to prosecuting lorry proprietors whose lorries were at present using the roads. The county clerk pointed out that there had already been a test case decided against the motor-lorry proprietors in connection with the use of Paekakariki Hill road.

The mater of the appointment of an inspector was left in the hands of a committee to report on.
