SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS TO VACANT SECTIONS.

The question of sewer connections to boundary of vacant sections was brought up at Tuesday night’s Council meeting by the report of the water and drainage committee, recommending that a charge of £-1 be maed to owners of vacant sections to bring the sewer connection from the main to the boundary of Faat section.

The Mayor pointed out that the usual procedure was for the Council to lay these connections and charge ’the owner with the cost of same. Had proprietors of vacant sections come along when the water and drainage scheme was being arrang- < d, provision could have been made for such connections. He proposed raising the water and drainage committee’s recommendation to a minimum of £4 10s and to make it a sliding scale. It was understood that these charges only applied where the sewer ran along the streets. Wjhere the sewers ran through private property no charge would be made on account of the saving to the Council affected by the owners of such property allowing the passage of the sewer. The saving affected in one such case alone amounted to £322. The Mayor considered the charge of £4 too little. Some connections would cost £lO.

Cr. Ross objected to the Mayor’s suggestion re charge. He said a (lat rate of £4 would easily cover flic cost of all connections. It was not fair to charge some connectors more than others. The Mayor said that a man had told him that one connection would cost £2O. Cr. Ross said lie could see no reason for raising the cost to £4 10s. Ten shillings would not break the Council in any ease. He was sure that on the average, the cost would not be greater than £4. It was finally decided to adopt the committee’s suggestion that a charge of £4 per connection be made.
