TAXATION
“A TYRANNICAL COMMISSION.” Wellington, Last Night. “We often hear about the tyranny of the Tsar of Russia, but no Commissioner should have the power which the Commissioner of Taxes possesses,” remarked Mr Hanan in the House to-day. Mr Hanan urged that a Taxation Appeal Board should be set up, to which appeals could be referred. Such a board was in existence in Australia. It might be stated that the man who was dissatisfied could appeal to the Supreme Court, but that meant a great deal of expense. Mr Hanan said he was thinking of the struggling farmers. When they appealed against the taxation demand, they were turned down, because the Government must have money for the carrying on of the Government in this country where the cost of government was so high.
