FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held at Palmerston North on Saturday, Mr Linklater, M.P., presiding. There" were also present: Messrs T. J. Chapham, W. Signal, J. Chrvstall, E. R. B. Holben and the secretary, Mr Roore Rangiheuea. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. '• Nash MAh.AY. E. Barber, and Runnier. In connection with Mr Barber’s absence, the secretary was instructed to forward a letter of sympathy in reference to a family bereavement. Matters referred lo in the secretary’s report were dealt with as follows: —

Re uplifting loan from Public Trustee, it was decided to allow the matter to remain as at present. In reference to the question of paying the cost of planking the cartways or approaches to the wharf already authorised by the Railway Department, on the motion of Mr Holben the matter was left in the hands <>f the chairman.

In reference to alterations and additions t ' pilot's residence, it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the local committee, with power to act. In reference In expenditure on wharf improvements reported upon by Messrs Signal and Barber, after discussion it was decided not to incur any expense in this connection until the proposed river cut was decided upon, as this may have an important bearing upon the locality of the wharf. The pilot’s report was favourably commented upon and it was "decided to ask the press to give full publieitv to the improved condition of the bar and river for shipping.

Tt was resolved to employ two men with horse and cart for three days for lupin planting purposes on saiid drift area at the Heads. The leases of sections as previously published were confirmed. Re applications for renewals of leases for a further period of 14 years, it was resolved to inform applicants that the Board cannot see its way to accede to their request. It was decided to leave the question of a re- valuation of the sections at the Heads to the local committee. It was resolved, after discussion, to request the Marine Department to take action against fiaxmillers for allowing flax refuse to be deposited in the river which was reported to he a serious menace to bridges, channel and shipping. Resolved to leave the proposed amendment to I lie Harbours Act, 1923, in the hands of the Chairman.J

Re draft of Bill for subsidising shipping, it was decided to submit same to the Attorney-General for perusal and upon a reply from him to further consider same.. Mr E. R. B. Holben moved that the chairman of the Board (Mr J. Linklater, M.P.,) and Messrs J. A. Nash, M.P., M. Cohen and J. Cobbe wait upon the Wellington Harbour Board to ascertain if it were possible to secure a portion of the Harbour Board sheds at Wellington as a receiving depot for goods for Foxton, or to make any other arrangements as might he deemed necessary to secure that end.

This was seconded by Mr T. J. Claplmni and carried. The chairman reported that he hud been unable to get the sanction of the Railway Department for a curt access to the Board’s goods shed but was able to obtain authority to store benzine in the shed. A grant of £2O was authorised to the Beach Improvement Committee for planting trees, etc. In connection with the proposed approach giving access to the river foreshore, near Langley’s boardinghouse, it was decided to authorise the Beach Improvement Committee to carry out same at their own cost.

The secretary reported a credit balance of £382 16s lOd.
