POST OFFICE SAVINGS AND THRIFT.

“Our State Savings Bank and our private home savings banks stand as monuments to the thrift and thoughtfulness of thousands of wage earners and people in the humble conditions of life,” observed Mr Hanan in the House on Thursday. “These institutions, which stand for thrift, self-denial - and patient industry should be encouraged.” The Prime Minister agreed with Mr Hanan. The enormous sum of money deposited in the savings banks was the best possible proof of the thrift and industry of the people of this country. There was deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank £40,000,000 and there were also several millions in local savings banks.
