CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

QUA R-TER LY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow, (president), McMnrray (secretary), A. X. Smith, Jno. Ross, Admore, Christie, Perron u , Riminer, Rangiheuea, Moir. Apologies were received from Messrs Alex Ross, Pearson, Healey and Thorpe.

ELECTRICITY. A communication was received from Mr Alex Ross, local representative on the Horowhenua Power Board, re the holding of a public meeting whereat the policy of the Board in respect to the supply of current and other details would lie discussed. The president stated that in conversation with the chairman oJ the Power Board he was informed that a canvass of Foxton would he made at an early date to ascertain local lequirements. The meeting should he held before this was done in order that probable customers would be fully informed.

It was decided to write to the chairman of the Board in writing to accompany Messrs Ross and the engineer. The secretary reported that he had interviewed Mi' Bell, chairman of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board, re addressing a public meeting and he was informed'that the date of the meeting would he fixed when matters were a little more forward. ADVERTISING FOXTt >N. The sub-committee appointed to deal with advertising propaganda reported that steps were being taken to obtain suitable photographs and when these were obtained, blocks would be made for printing purposes. The Committee hoped to have the scheme tixed by next meeting. Correspondence was received from the Wellington Chamber re post-card day in connetion with the British Empire Exhibition in 1924. The suggestion was that post cardlie obtained by various organisations and forwarded to England on a certain date to boost, the New Zealand Court. —The secretary was instructed to write for fuller details of the proposed scheme. REDUCED LOCAL SHIPPING FREIGHTS.

The following letter was received from the agents of the s.s. Kennedy : “Re Freights, Wellington to Foxton. —You will be glad to hear that above have been reduced as under: General Cargoes from 22/6 to 21 6 per ton measurement,or weight; m>>tor spirit, etc, 35/- to 1/6 per case; kerosene 22/6 ot 1/1 per ease; single parcels or small packages 3/6 to 2/6 min. for 1 package or parcel only. "These new rates came into force on the Ist inst. and bring our freights on a level with the WellingtonWangnmii rates, although Wanganui is a far better port to work than Foxton. "We trust that these reductions will be duly appreciated by the local business 'people, and that they will give us their whole-hearted support in the future.” - The matter of freights was fully explained by Mr Moir and after a lengthy discussion it was unanimously decided to thank the shipping company for the reductions and to co-operate in promoting local shipping with the port. COMPANIES BILL. The Attorney-General forwarded three copies of the proposed Companies Bill to lie submitted to Parliament this session. These were distributed to interested members and any suggestions will be forwarded on through the secretary. TERRITORIAL TRAINING. The Defence Department wrote re proposal to hold training camp for Territorials from August 27th to Ist. September.—Decided to approve the dates of same. NIGHT WATCHMAN. Mr Admore brought up the question of the night watchman’s duties and payment. After some discussion it was decided to invite the night watchman to attend the next meeting of the Chamber with the object of ascertaining fuller details. VOTE OF THANKS. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Admore and Perreau re the seiul-off to Mr Follas, ex-vice-presi-dent. NEW MEMBERS. Messrs Preston and Stolir were unanimously elected members of the Chamber.
