WATER AND DRAINAGE BYLAWS.

SUGGESTED ALTERATIONS,

NO BETTER THAN PRESENT BY-LAWS.

At the last monthly meeting of the Borough Council it was decided to ask Mr Roy, the borough plumber, to revise the existing water and drainage by-laws and submit a draft copy at the next meeting. A special meeting was convened last Tuesday night to deal with this matter. Mr Roy was not present but the by-laws drawn up by him were submitted for consideration.

A letter was read from the Health Officer, Mr Huggins, who had also received a. copy of the revised bylaws, stating that he considered the draft very unsatisfactory. The Mayor said that he was absolutely fogged. Cr. McMurray’s suggestion to revise the by-laws was a good one, but the draft submitted got' them no further ahead. Cr. Smith said that he was very disappointed with the draft. It was not what was asked for and it had taken Mr Roy two weeks to draw them up, at a cost of £l2 to the Council. Mr Roy should have been present at the meeting. The draft was merely a copy of some by-laws with additions to suit himself (Mr Roy). Mr Roy had been asked to bring down a report on the by-laws and have his suggestions approved bv the Health Officer. This was not done and the Council was no further forward. It meant that the Water and Drainage Committee would have to do the work that the Council was paying a plumber to do. Cr. Thorpe took strong exception to tin* report and said it was a“lot of rot.” The Mayor said that the final authority was the Health pepartment. .Mr Huggins would lie in Foxton on Friday and he suggested that the Water and Drainage Committee meet him and discuss the matter, It was decided that the above committee meet Mr Huggins at 10 o’clock cm Friday morning.
