FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION.

The local Volunteer Fire Brigade Ball, held in the Town Hall last night was a most successful and brilliant function and was attended by a record number of dancers, besides a fair number of spectators. The decorations of greenery. and streamers were very artistic. Looking from the doorway the stage gave the appearance of a beautiful piece of native bush, tree ferns, flax, toi foi and other native shrubs were grouped in a most natural setting filling the whole of the stage and the effect in the subdued light was magnificent. Suspended from the centre of the hall was an artistically designed bell from which red streamers spread in all directions to the galleries. Beneath the bell was concealed a quantity of confetti, which was showered upon the dancers as a fitting finale. The supperroom decorations were in keeping with the artistic scheme in the dancing hall. The grand march, led by Mr and Mrs Perreau, was a very spectacular opening, the coloured lighting from the spot light, with other lights obscured, added a fine effect to the animated and graceful movements of those taking part. The dance music was supplied by Larkin’s orchestra. Messrs Perreau, Smith, and Head were the M.’sC. Mr Perreau, on behalf of the Brigade, extended a welcome to those present and at a later stage asked Mr Hornblow (chairman of the Fire Board) to speak. Mr Hornblow congratulated the Brigade and their lady assistants on the splendid success of the function. He referred to the voluntary services of the brigadesmen without whose aid the Fire Board would be of little value to the community. They received no remuneration for their services and the effort that night was to augment their social fund and in this—connection it was hoped that the Fire Board would co-operate. The brigade was well equipped with fire-fighting apparatus and had a fine body of men, with several on the waiting list to offer (heir services in a noble cause. The cost of fire prevention was spread equitably between the Borough Council, fire insurance companies, and Government and Foxton was now in the forefront in this connection. The Fire Board would do its best in the interests of the Brigade and in promote its social side.. He hoped the ball would he the forerunner of many similar functions. The Brigade social committee, under the leadership of Deputy-Su-perintendent Nattrass, were responsible for the decorations and Mrs Pearson was at the head of the ladies catering committee. Among those present were several representatives of other brigades and visitors from all parts of the district. The hall, as a whole, was one of the largest attended and most enjoyable functions yet held locally. The Brigade desire to sincerely thank the ladies and all who contributed to make the function such a financial and social success.
