PROPOSED SUGAR DUTY.
COMPANY’S THREAT TO CLOSE,
Wellingon, July 17. The House to-night discussed the resolutions brought down by the Minister of Customs, Mr DownieStewart, to the effect that a duty of five-sixteenths of a penny in the £1 should be placed on sugar. Mr Stewart supported the motion with the observation that there was a danger of the Chelsea works closing down.
Mr Wilford opposed the resolution and described the threat of the Colonial Sugar Company to close down as a bluff. Both Liberal and Labour members opposed the resolution, and after several hours’ discussion, Mr Holland moved an amendment that in event of the company closing down, the Government should take over the works at Chelsea and operate them. The resolutions amending the Customs Tariff to allow of the introduction of the duty were agreed to.
