WANDERERS V. FOXTON,
Wanderer’s win over Foxton by 26 to 6 pretty well indicated the relative strength of the two teams. Foxton played one man short, and were, as well, considerably outweighed in the pack, so that, in the scrums they were at no time able to hold their weightier opponents, nor able to make any headway ngainst them in forward movements. In the backs they were better served, Moses on the three-quarter line, Lamberg, at half, and Bryant as full-back, all playing sterling games. Foxton opened with a strong forward movement, invading Wanderers’ territory in dangerous style. Percy McLeavey saved by finding the line. From the throw-in the referee awarded a free kick to Foxton, a splendid kick resulting in a poster. Strong rushes by both sides looked like scoring, McLeavey again saving for Wanderers, and Bryant for Foxton. A passing rush by the Wanderers resulted in Howell getting the ball over, but Foxton forced. Wanderers continued to force and a fine passing bout which originated with T. McDonald, through Winiata, enabled Wilson to get over. Tatana added the extra points. Wanderers 5, Foxton nil. Foxton retaliated and pressing down to the Wanderers’ 25, a free kick gave Moses a chance at goal, which he made no mistake about. Wanderers 5, Foxton 3. A free kick to Wanderers a few minutes later resulted in a poster, but they now had the measure of their opponents and were throwing the ball about freely among the hacks, an effort from Winiata do Utiku, to Wilson, to Tauera. enabling the latter to add another three points to the score, the kick failing, the spell ending W r anderers 11, Foxton 3.
A spell of open play without any special brilliancy on either side, kept the ball moving up and down the field at the beginning of the second half, several nasty rushes into Foxton’s territory being staved off by Bryant’s good kicking. A free kick a few minutes later enabled Tatana to kick an easy goal, and shortly after from a serum five yards out W. Winiafa picked up and making the most of his weight, scored, no goal resulting. Wanderers 11, Foxton 3. Foxton made a strong: attack at this point, Moses tajdng the ball right through at his feet, but Howell forced. Howell and Campion led an attack in re turn but the Foxton backs by a bit of smart play returned the leather to the 25 where Moses from a free ' ick, added another 3 points for Foxton, making the score 11 —(>. From this point the play was all in Wanderers’ favour, despite some good work by Lamberg and Moses, who certainly prevented the score from being heavier. Nepia, WiniaLa, Kerione, Campion and Howell, added scores in quick succession, none of which were converted, and the game ended 26 —6. Mr Horo Karauti was referee.
MEETING OF RI'GBY UNION. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Horowhenua Rugby Union was held at Levin on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Procter being in the chair. There were also present Messrs McMillan, Sciascia, Hutchings, Austin, Casey, and the secretary, Mr L. Carmichael. REF. FIXTURES. The Wellington Rugby Union wrote that it would not be possible to arrange a rep. match this season. It was decided that July 25 be accepted as the date for the Bebbington Shield match against tho Bush Union. Agreed that August 11 be accepted as date for the return game against the Manawatu Union, to be played at Palmerston North. Regarding the selection of the combined Wellington, Manawatu and Horowhenua teams to play New South Wales, the secretary was instructed to write to the secretary of the Manawatu Union that this Union agrees to one selector from each Union.
It was decided to write to the secretary of the East Coast Union, that this union was prepared to give them a rep. match on any date in August with the exception of August 11 and 22, and would allow them 50 per cent, of the net gate money. ROUGH PLAY. W. Pini, of the Foxton Juniors Club, who had been ordered to the line in the Foxton-Shannon game on
Saturday, appeared before the Uniou to answer a charge of fighting on the field. Pini denied having done more than hold the other man. The referee explained that he had not seen the beginning of the affair, but when he turned this man and his opponent appeared to be having a proper fight, the ball being out of play at- the time. Had ordered both players off the field, this man «*oing quietly, but the other man had given more trouble. Mr Austin stated that the other, player who had not <• me forward, was a thoroughly unsatisfactory man on a football field. He had seen him in other games, and he was always giving trouble. He considered it quite probable that he had started the trouble and not Pini. The referee said he could not .say who was the aggressor, but that when he had seen them they were both apparently fighting. It was possible that Pini was only protecting himself. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that a severe caution would meet the case, the other player to he suspended until such time as he appeared before the Union. Two other "players, A. Cook, of Hui Alai seniors, and AlcEwan, of Shannon Thirds, who had been ordered to the line on Saturday were also suspended until their appearance to answer the charges against them. TRAVELLING EXPENSES OF REP. PLAYERS. The question of the position of the Union regarding the travelling expenses of rep. players came up for discussion through the receipt of a bill for 30s for bringing two players to the last rep. game. After some discussion, Air Casey moved “That i-en. players in future must pay their travelling expenses to Ihe ground on which the rep. games are played, if within the Union, and must assemble at the assembly place at their own expense in the case of a travelling team.”— Carried. i GENERAL. \ Referees’ and gatekeepers’ reports were received. Accounts to the amount of £9 17s fid were passed for payment. Agreed that a player’s insurance of £4 be paid. The chairman brought up the question of junior rep. games,, and moved that the Rangitikei Union be .written to asking that the return game of their junior reps, be played as a curtain raiser to the senior rep. game to ho played at Foxton, provided such senior game can he arranged. It was further resolved that Afanawatu be asked to submit a date for the return game of their junior reps. The secretary was instructed., notify the selector of the dates_xiy re)i. games, and that it was proposed to assemble the team on the Afondny prior to the Wednesday match against the Bush Union.
