PRICE OF FOOD.
An increase in the three food groups —meal, groceries, and dairy produce—of 9 points is recorded by the Government Statistician. He siiows that at 15th May, the date of compilation, the increase in the groups was 42.52 per cent, over juices current in July, 1914. Groceries have increased by 14 points, attributable to higher prices for potatoes, and'sugar lias increased in price in minor towns. In the dairy foods group there has been an increase of 33 points, owing to the raising of the juice of milk, varying from Id to 2d. A fall in the juice of certain beef joints accounts for a drop of 15 points in the index number for the meat group; but, all told, food is ui> in |>rice 9 points on the prices in July, 1914. That is to sa.y, what was then jmrcliasable in the form of meat, groceries, butter, cheese, and milk for £2 10s, costs, apjn'oximately, £3 11s to-day.
